In past mehndi was limited to certain customs and traditions but today all the communities make use of mehndi for decorating and beautifying their hands as well as feet. The popularity of mehndi is evident form the countless magazines that features mehndi designs and patterns.

The traditional mehndi art is still adorned for applying henna on the hands as well as feet; it is an essential part of every Indian festive. The major mehndi patterns styles are Middle Eastern style, North African style, Indonesian and Southern Asian styles and Indian and Pakistani designs. The art of mehndi designs have varies from one country to the other, spanning different religious traditions and cultures.
Red hues of heena are used to beautify the hands and feet of women. It is also used as a conditioner and hair dye by men and women. In fact, natural heena is the best form for hair dye. It not only gives good color to hair but also good texture and shine.
Heena grows through most parts of India though it is the major commercial crop only in north western states where the climate is relatively dry and hot. Heena from the farms of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab is sold as hair dye. They are not of body art quality. Farms in Rajasthan often produce body art quality heena. The dry and hot areas of Gujarat also produce good quality heena. Southern and sheltered areas for heena are suitable for heena production. Hence, dryer and hotter weather with prolonged droughts are best for high quality heena.
